In this conversation, I discuss why recovery drives adaptation - exercise is the stress, recovery is when you get stronger. I talk through acute vs chronic recovery, how perimenopause increases sympathetic drive (“tired but wired”), and how more anovulatory cycles and less progesterone alter HRV, respiratory rate, vagal tone, fuel use, and sleep architecture. This clip highlights practical ways to nudge the parasympathetic system - mindfulness, non-sleep deep rest/yoga nidra, L-theanine, and cooling strategies at bedtime, and why staying out of constant moderate “just going through the motions” training matters. We also touch on allostatic load from real life teens, aging parents, and how to decide when training is eustress versus distress.
