Movies Reimagined highlights performance artist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist Julia Vering’s novel way of engaging a diverse population of long-term care residents in improvising classic movies through humor, imagination, and multi-sensory elements. The film documents both the capacity of residents to fully engage through embodied, adaptive, theatrical and musical ways, and the resulting community building, joy and expansion of roles and identities the process fosters.

The companion book, Adaptive Reimaginings, is a visual memoir and practical workbook chronicles Julia Vering’s 20+ year journey infusing the arts into healthcare settings. As a performance artist, licensed clinical social worker, and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, Vering shares her origin story and pioneering work integrating video, drama, and other creative practices in long-term care settings. The book, including a hands-on guide for caregivers and group facilitators, offers vivid documentation of her collaborations with older adults, people with dementia and disabilities.
Half of all proceeds from the book support Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care and the Reimagining Dementia Coalition.
