If your child avoids hard things, shuts down, or seems “unmotivated,” I want you to pause before you blame character.
In this episode, I’m talking with ADHD coach Jeff Copper @Digcoaching @AttentionTalkVideo about motivation through the lens of executive function impairment — and it completely reframes what we think is happening when our neurodivergent kids struggle.
Motivation isn’t about willpower. It’s not about laziness. It’s not about “not trying hard enough.”
Jeff explains motivation as a two-force system:
The automatic brain seeks comfort and avoids discomfort.
The executive functioning brain drives effortful achievement.
Here’s the key: ADHD is an executive function impairment. That means effort costs more. Emotionally. Mentally. Physically.
When effort feels heavier, colder, and more painful, avoidance makes sense. What looks like defiance may actually be nervous system self-protection.
We also talk about:
– Why rewards and punishments often fall flat
– Why “extra time” can actually prolong suffering
– What adaptive accommodations really look like
– How direct oral processing supports working memory
– Why environment can amplify or mute ADHD symptoms
If you’re parenting a child with ADHD, autism, or other executive function challenges, this conversation will help you shift from shame to understanding — and from frustration to practical support.
You are not failing. Your child is not lazy. The system just hasn’t been built with their brain in mind.
If this resonates, please like, subscribe, and share with another parent who needs this reframing. The more we change the narrative around neurodivergent kids and motivation, the more dignity and support we can create.
Take a deep breath. You’re doing meaningful work.
