In this video, I discuss the large trader (whale) who may be behind the recent rally in tech stocks, as well as their subsequent crash.

It has been revealed that SoftBank (best known for its investments in Uber and WeWork) has been buying very large amounts of call options on tech stocks.

This would explain why implied volatilities (including the VIX) have been moving up along with stocks. Option market makers need to buy more shares of stock as a stock rises, in order to maintain their delta-neutral hedge. This can lead to a positive feedback loop, where the more stocks go up, the more shares that market makers need to buy.
