Shallow breath, a weight of dread.
Lebel rifle held so tight,
Bayonet gleams in the pale moonlight.

To my right, Jules whispers prayer,
To my left, René stares bare.
Boots in mud, the silence thick,
Beneath the flag, the rage runs quick.

We await the call, the whistle’s scream,
The corporal’s shout will crack the dream.
The gunners hum, nerves start to burn,
The bullets hiss at every turn.

Grenades and pins rest on the wall,
The rats escape — they sense it all.
A shell explodes, the earth does quake,
The dust it chokes, and bodies break.

We were soldiers for the land,
We fell by fate, by duty’s hand.
Our sacrifice, a nation’s shield,
Against the tyrants, we would not yield.

Then thunder strikes, our cannons roar,
A scream held tight, a cry for war.
The guns awake, hell comes alive,
The ringing drowns what hopes survive.

We charge ahead, the soil flies,
Shrapnel rains from shattered skies.
My heartbeat races, war draws near,
To kill the Hun, I’ve lost all fear.

We were soldiers for the land,
We fell by fate, by duty’s hand.

Short bursts fly, the bullets dart,
Bodies crumble, torn apart.
A Fokker dives across our line,
Machine guns howl, their deadly sign.

A brother falls, his mouth agape,
The ground runs red, there’s no escape.
Past twisted wire, I raise my aim,
The foe is close – I feel the flame.

With grenades I clear the path,
I am the storm, I am the wrath.
A German lunges through the smoke,
The clash of flesh, the bayonet broke.

Inside the trench, the blades collide,
A strike, a scream – no place to hide.
I am the reaper, cold and low,
My fury strikes the final blow.

My name engraved on granite stone,
You’ll read it there, though I’m unknown.
