This is one of my favorite hikes anywhere on the planet!
Must haves:
GOOD FOOTWARE. There is a rock scramble here in wet conditions. Slips and falls would be BAD.
Bug spray.
Drinking water. This hike takes a lot out of you, IMO, if you go the route that we did.
About Charco Prieto
This hike appears on AllTrails as a hike from an area south of San Juan, Puerto Rican close to a town called Bayamon. They have a pindrop for the trailhead, which is off of a road where it appears as the locals are trying to improve the parking and first entry to the trail. Previously, it started literally in someone's back yard.
This is a 1 mile out and back hike that supposedly takes roughly 35 minutes. Anyone who does this hike in 35 minutes, however, is missing out on a lot of super cool features. There are no assigned trails. There are several spurs that circumnavigate some of the rapids, but it is possible to boulder scramble your way all the way through the entire mile journey. Some of the areas are rather difficult to do, however.
Once you reach the main waterfall -- and if you are not sure if you have gotten to the destination, then you have not -- you need to do one final tricky ascent to get to top area to get close to the main falls. This is a 100 foot falls that is spectacular in every way.
About the video
This is the second time we have done a video on this hike. The first one had a ton of video glitches because it is actually a very difficult to get the lighting right. What we did here was highlight the actual hike in the first part of the video. The second part is dedicated to the main waterfall and the final part highlights the many spectacular rapids that you see on the hike.
