The Youth Congress later defended the protest by invoking Mahatma Gandhi, drawing parallels to symbolic resistance and non-conformist political expression. Congress MP Imran Masood justified the demonstration, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, an INDIA bloc ally, distanced himself from the protest.

The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly condemned the act, calling it an embarrassment on a global stage. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress of selectively invoking Gandhi’s legacy to justify disruption.

Political tensions escalated beyond the summit venue. In Indore, clashes broke out between Congress and BJP workers, leading to stone-pelting and injuries, including a journalist caught in the crossfire. Protests erupted across Delhi, Mumbai, Surat, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Jaipur, with BJP leaders demanding accountability from Congress leadership.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju termed the incident a “national embarrassment” and criticised the protest during a global event.

On the legal front, the Patiala House Court has sent four Youth Congress workers to five days of police remand in connection with the protest. Delhi Police have alleged that the act was a conspiracy to defame the country internationally.
