Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry called the comments “extremist rhetoric” and urged the United States Department of State to clarify the official stance.

Huckabee, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, later appeared to soften his remarks, describing them as “somewhat hyperbolic.”

The episode has added fresh strain to already sensitive regional dynamics amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
