The long run is a component of training for a 5k race for cross country and track seasons. However, I believe the long run is over-hyped. When training for a 5k, the long run is not what’s going to make or break your fitness. While running further than race distance isn’t a bad idea, there’s not much benefit to an excessively long long run.
The majority of the improvements in endurance and speed and fitness for 5k runners is due to the track / interval workouts. Now if you’re doing tempo runs inside of your long run for certain reasons, that’s a different story.
The long and slow long run is just not specific enough to give you transfer to a 5k, it’s not fast enough or intense enough to stimulate meaningful adaptations, the biomechanics are not the same, and the aerobic and mitochondria benefits are already stimulated to an even greater extent with intense training such as what takes place on a track or performing interval workouts.
