In this episode of True Blue Touring, it’s finally time to give our Toyota LandCruiser FJ55 a heart — an engine conversion using a 1FZ petrol straight-six from an 80 Series LandCruiser.
After finishing the major rust repairs on the body and panels, we turned our attention to the powertrain. When we first picked this FJ55 up on the farm it had no engine, gearbox, or mounts, giving us the perfect excuse to build something different from the ground up.
An opportunity came up to buy a cheap 80 Series LandCruiser donor vehicle, which became the parts supply for not one but two projects. While a turbo diesel would’ve been ideal, budget ruled it out, and the 1FZ petrol proved to be a great modern equivalent to the original 2F.
In this video we:
Strip the 80 Series donor and sell unused parts
Position the 1FZ engine and gearbox into the FJ55
Source and install engine mounts without damaging the chassis
Modify the floor and fabricate gearbox crossmember mounts
Remove the original crossmember brackets
Trial-fit the 80 Series radiator (and realise it won’t fit… yet)
Install 80 Series bucket seats with custom-made seat rails
Fabricate a custom gearbox tunnel from scratch
Build a removable service panel for future gearbox access
Fire up the 1FZ in its new home for the first time
We also break down what happened to the rest of the 80 Series donor — from parts sales to its chassis becoming the base for another full build on the channel.
This episode marks a huge milestone in the FJ55 restoration, and you can see just how far the build — and the welding skills — have come.
👉 Next episode: the FJ55 moves under its own power for the first time in years.
