In this episode of True Blue Touring, we finally get the FJ55 LandCruiser running and driving for the first time in years with a pre-assembly test drive.
Before finishing the bodywork, we wanted to fit everything up and make sure the drivetrain, wiring, cooling and brakes all worked together in the real world. What followed was one of the most involved stages of the build so far.
We start by reworking the 80 Series wiring loom, modifying the firewall to suit new grommets and extra wiring, and adapting the 80 Series dash cluster into the 55 dash. After plenty of trial and error, most of the original 55 switches were successfully converted to work with the 80 Series wiring, while the heater fan and wipers were given their own independent looms. The ECU found a neat home above the glovebox.
In the engine bay we reused as many 80 Series components as possible, including the brake booster, fuse boxes, washer bottle and overflow tank. Other jobs included custom battery tray fabrication, making new brake, clutch and fuel lines, and solving one of the biggest challenges of the build — fitting a radiator.
We chose an aluminium FJ45 radiator with thermo fan, modified the front apron and radiator support, fabricated mounts, and reinforced the whole front end to suit. A custom long-range fuel tank, external Bosch fuel pump, rear disc brakes using a 75 Series diff, and suspension upgrades followed.
After bleeding the brakes and fixing one loose fuel line mishap, the FJ55 finally drove under its own power.
👉 Next episode: final body work and paint.
