Mondays with the Mayor - American Flag Rescue Program

Описание: Join Beth Sweeny as she sits down with Chris Benjamin of St. Johns County to talk about the American Flag Rescue Program and its impact on our community.

Since launching in September 2018, the program has provided residents with a respectful way to retire worn American flags. What began with 154 flags collected in its first year has grown tremendously — with 7,757 flags properly decommissioned in 2025 alone. Thanks to community partnerships and support from organizations like WSOS Radio, there are now 35 collection boxes located throughout the county.

The City of St. Augustine Beach has proudly hosted a donation box at City Hall for the past five years, making it easy for residents to properly retire their flags. Collected flags are respectfully decommissioned during monthly ceremonies held at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) on the third Saturday of each month. Veterans and community members are welcome to attend and participate.

If you have a worn or damaged American flag, we encourage you to drop it off at City Hall for proper retirement.
