Placenta Previa | Understanding the Difference from a Low Lying Placenta | Dr Tehmina Rehman
Placenta previa is a condition that occurs during pregnancy when the placenta lies unusually low in the uterus, either partially or completely covering the cervix. Normally, the placenta is attached to the upper part of the uterus. However, in placenta previa, it can partially or completely cover the cervix, the outlet of the uterus. This condition can cause bleeding during pregnancy and can pose risks to both the mother and the baby.
Placenta previa is typically diagnosed during a routine ultrasound examination. Symptoms can include painless vaginal bleeding during the second or third trimester. However, in some cases, there might be no symptoms until labor begins.
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and how far along the pregnancy is. In mild cases where there is minimal bleeding and the pregnancy is not too far along, bed rest and careful monitoring may be sufficient. However, if the bleeding is severe or if the pregnancy is close to term, early delivery via cesarean section may be necessary to avoid complications.
Placenta previa can increase the risk of complications such as preterm birth, excessive bleeding, and the need for blood transfusions. It's essential for women diagnosed with placenta previa to follow their healthcare provider's recommendations closely and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any bleeding or other concerning symptoms during pregnancy.
