"This is a life-changing experience!" Both Tabitha Mukami Nduku and Derrick Odhiambo Owino felt this way when they were in Germany. It was their first ever trip abroad: straight from the slums and its poverty to one of the most prosperous countries in the world.
Siegburg's Alleestraße secondary school made it possible, or to be more precise: the school's sponsorship organisation. For the two students, it was not only their first trip abroad. During their ten-day stay in Germany, they travelled by train for the first time.
Both are scholarship holders of the Ayiera Initiative, a so-called "Community Based Organisation" (CBO). We would say: an aid organisation. The initiative works in the third largest slum in the Kenyan capital Nairobi - and has already been able to help thousands of children and young people.
Thanks to the ongoing support of the "Gymnasium Siegburg Alleestraße" - as the school is officially called - young people from the slum are now even able to study. The organisation "Zukunft für Kinder in Slums e.V." plays a decisive role in this. It forms the bridge between the school and the initiative.
Last but not least, there is an important piece of information to add to the video. Parents, students, teachers and others "all around": they all contributed to making the two guests feel at home in Germany. With friendliness, hospitality, invitations, ideas and lots of warmth. Asante sana to all those who contributed to making the visit a "life-changing experience" for the two guests from Kenya, in the very best sense of the word.
