Late-night swing jazz with a lively, relaxed groove. A playful tune that stays unassuming and easy to end the night with.
On this day in jazz history…
Frankie Newton (January 4, 1906, to March 11, 1954)
Born in Emory, Virginia, trumpeter William Frank "Frankie" Newton was a masterful musician whose individualistic style placed him at important moments in jazz history.
He played on Bessie Smith's final recording session on November 24, 1933, including her legendary "Gimme a Pigfoot." In April 1939, Newton's eight-piece Café Society Band recorded one of the most powerful songs about racial violence in American history: "Strange Fruit" with Billie Holiday.
Newton was the first horn player to record for Blue Note Records. He led the house band at Café Society, New York City's first integrated nightclub, which opened in December 1938.
His mellow, thoughtful tone and dynamic improvisations influenced generations of trumpeters. Newton brought poetic lyricism to the swing era while staying true to his blues roots.
He died of gastritis in New York City at age 48.
All music (including AI-assisted elements) and visuals are original, curated, and produced by Two Cats Jazz Radio.
