A relaxed Jamaican jazz piece, steady and unforced, designed to drift quietly and soften the sense of time.
On this day in jazz history…
Allen Toussaint (Born January 14, 1938)
New Orleans' most influential musical architect was born on this day in the Gert Town neighborhood. Allen Toussaint became a producer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, and vocalist who shaped the New Orleans R&B sound for generations.
Often called the "Hoover of New Orleans" for having a hand in nearly every major hit coming out of the city during the '60s and '70s, Toussaint wrote and produced tracks including Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law," Lee Dorsey's "Working in the Coal Mine," and Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo."
His sophisticated arrangements and funky rhythms became the city's musical blueprint. Toussaint stood alongside legends like Jelly Roll Morton, Mahalia Jackson, and Fats Domino.
He died of a heart attack at age 77 on November 10, 2015, while on tour in Madrid, Spain, but his musical legacy continues to define New Orleans.
