The dials on any camera can be confusing with all those symbols. However, the thing to remember is that there are only three ways to add or reduce light entering the camera (without the use of ND filters that is). Those are:
• Shutter Speed
• Aperture
• ISO (Sensor Sensitivity)
The basic rule is that once you have a good exposure, if you let more or less light in by altering one of the above, you have to counter that with an opposite setting with one of the other two.
For example, if you have a perfect set up for a good exposure but want a more shallow depth of field, less in focus, you need to open the aperture. This will let in more light so the counter action is to let less light in by either reducing the ISO to 100 or 50, and if that is not possible, you can increase the shutter speed.
With this in mind, it is worth knowing that all the symbols on your camera dial, sports, close up, mountains etc, simply make the above adjustments for you depending on what sort of photography you are doing.
Watch the video and go out and practice with each setting until it is second nature. Once you do, photography becomes so much more fun as all you then concentrate on is the fun stuff like lighting and composition.
