Black Pro Mist Filter
These are pretty cool and come in varying strengths. They simply add a slight "mist" or flare to lights in your shot. Great for photography and video but don't overdo it otherwise you will enter the soft focus glam era of the 1980's : )
Neutral Density Filters
We covered this in a previous video. Essential for outdoor videography, especially in bright sun.
Big Stopper Filter
These are normally 10-Stops of light reduction, or more, to enable you to shoot milky waterfalls/rivers and super long exposures in the daytime. No good for video...
Reversal Rings
These simply allow you to reverse the lens on your camera making a simple 50mm lens into a super close macro lens.
These filters can not only add to your creativity but they will also motivate you to go out and start creating. Getting bored with your photography? Re-ignite your passion with one (or all) of these…
Basic Photography - Step Up/Down Rings
No glass in them? What do they do?
Step up and step down rings will save you money! Let’s say you have a number of lenses with varying filter thread sizes on the front (i.e. 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 77mm and 82mm). These will vary depending on the lens.
Step up rings
If you wanted to use a polariser filter on all of these lenses, you would need to buy multiple filters yes? Well, by purchasing a set of step “up” rings, starting at the largest filter ring size on your biggest lens, you can then use multiple sized filters on the same lens. Cool huh!
So for example, the filter thread on my Canon EF 70-200mm lens is 77mm. I have a number of filters with that thread size as it is the largest size I currently need. My Canon EF50mm 1.4 lens has a filter thread of 58mm. Therefore, I would need a step up ring from 58mm to 77mm and I can then use the same filter on both lenses.
Step down rings
These do the opposite meaning you can put a smaller filter on a larger lens thread but beware. If, for example, you used a step down ring from 77mm to say 39mm, you are attempting to use a 39mm filter on a 77mm threaded lens. This will undoubtedly cause vignetting at the edges as you are putting a small filter on a large lens and trying to shoot through it.
This is why most sets only step down a minimal distance such as 77mm to 72mm. If you do use step down rings, you may need to either “zoom through” the vignetting or if using a fixed focal length lens, crop the image during editing.
Quality doesn’t matter so much here as it is just a metal ring. Still, make sure it is metal (aluminium) and not plastic. A full set of step up and down rings will cost about £22. A vast saving from having to buy multiple, high quality filters.
