Walter Schachner was a dynamic forward for the Austria national team. During the 1978 FIFA World Cup, he showcased his exceptional scoring prowess and relentless work ethic. Known for his remarkable speed and agility, he played a key role in Austria's attacking lineup, contributing to their memorable victories and thrilling performances against the likes of Spain, Sweden, and defending champions West Germany, the latter of which they would knock out of the tournament. Throughout the tournament, he clocked significant minutes on the pitch, serving as both a playmaker and a finisher, although his passionate style of play did earn him a yellow card. His dedication and energy endeared him to fans, cementing his reputation as an exciting and influential figure in his national team's World Cup journey. Four years later, he would represent his country again in the World Cup in Spain, where he'd score yet another two goals and proving himself as still a vital member of the team. In the video, he is shown scoring against Spain, Scotland, Portugal, West Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Chile, Algeria, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Turkey, and the Netherlands. He also scored against Albania, Greece, and Israel. He played 64 matches for the Austrians, scoring 23 times. At the end of the video, he scores one of his last ever international goals during his country's ill-fated 1986 World Cup qualification campaign. With the score at 0-0, Hungary lost possession in the midfield and young upstart Toni Polster (who would go on to become Austria's all-time top goalscorer) picked out the alert Schachner and deftly put him through towards the Hungarian penalty box. The darting predator Schachner was just too fast and skillful for the Hungarians, completely outpacing them, avoiding Antal Róth's desperate sliding tackle and expertly shooting past József Andrusch into the far post and into the net. A wonderful goal that would later prove useless as the Hungarians came back to win 3-1 in Budapest. As in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Schachner would be his country's top goalscorer in qualification, with them finishing third in their group right behind the Netherlands who went through to a play-off against Belgium due to a superior goal difference. Despite him never again taking part of another major tournament in an Austrian jersey, this goal displayed his ability, intelligence and lethal accuracy in front of goal.
