Deyna was a Polish attacking midfielder who assumed the playmaker role and was one of the most highly regarded players of his generation. His play was characterized by excellent vision, precise short passes, and the ability to glide past defenders with a graceful touch. He was known for his calm and relaxed demeanor, tactical intelligence, a surprising aerial ability and he had an unerring shot that could score from anywhere, famously scoring directly from a corner kick against Portugal. He made a career with Legia Warsawa in Poland, Manchester City in England, and San Diego Rockers in the now-defunct NASL. He is shown scoring against Bulgaria, Denmark, Morocco, Hungary, the Netherlands, Belgium, Haiti, Iran, Cyprus, Portugal, Greece, the Republic of Ireland, Mexico, and Italy. He also scored against Canada, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Ghana, Luxembourg, Norway, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, the USA, the USSR, and Yugoslavia. At the international level, he earned 97 caps and scored 41 goals helping Poland claim 3rd place at the 1974 FIFA World Cup. At the Summer Olympics, he won gold with his country and was the top goalscorer of the tournament in 1972 and won silver four years later. From 1973 to 1978, he served as captain of the national team. Tragically, he died in a car crash in San Diego in 1989, just days before Italian World Cup-winner Gaetano Scirea would suffer the same fate in Poland. At the end of the video, Deyna is shown scoring one's of Poland's two goals in a 2-1 victory over Italy. The Poles arrived at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany as major revelation, returning to the tournament for the first time since 1938 and eliminating England in the process. Just as the Dutch had dazzled fans in their group matches, the Poles had impressed with successive wins over Argentina and Haiti, beating them 3-2 and 7-0, respectively. In their final group match against Italy, all that was left for Poland to do was to secure at least another point to finish top of the group. But the Poles weren't interested in doing the bare minimum, as they clearly set out to win against the hapless Italians as well. After some Italian resistance, Henryk Casperczak crossed over to Andrzej Szarmach to head the opener for Poland. Just a few minutes later, the same man assisted to the onrushing Deyna to blast in a second Polish goal (and his personal second since scoring against Haiti) right before half-time. Italy had made some changes since their 1-1 deadlock with Argentina, even going as far as benching Gianni Rivera and Luigi Riva, two of their aging heroes from the last tournament in Mexico four years earlier in favor of a fresher lineup. The young Fabio Capello had nearly vindicated the Italian coach by finally scoring against the Polish but it had been too little, too late. They'd simply been no match for Poland's deft passing, with Deyna having been the main architect in their defeat. For a team that had finished runners-up in 1970 and were favorites to reach another consecutive Final, Italy had all but disappointed. Poland would not only top their group in the First Round with a perfect record but would also finish in Third Place ahead of defending champions Brazil and having lost only to eventual winners and hosts West Germany. Deyna would return to the World Cup four years later in Argentina as team captain although completing a less successful campaign before signing off from international football with a stunning goal against Mexico and suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brazil.
I do not own the music.
