The Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of Crete, was the highlight of my time in Greece. The hike took about 6 hours and covered over 16 kilometers (10 miles) — and that doesn't even include the walk into town afterward.
The initial descent is the most challenging part, but the well-maintained trail and frequent rest areas make it manageable. We were lucky to have perfect weather, and the scenery was incredible the entire way.
At the end, we passed through the abandoned village of Samaria, which has a monument honoring the men taken by the Nazis in February 1944. Six villagers were sent to the Mauthausen Extermination Camp and never seen again. May their memory be eternal.
We finished the hike in the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, which is only accessible by foot or ferry. We had a delicious post-hike lunch at a local taverna.
After lunch, I went for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea while we waited for the ferry. It was the perfect way to cool down!
