“.......In push hands, occupy your forward territory with the front leg as the tree trunk (or rooting) leg, and do not yield your torso backward carelessly. The rooting/tree trunk leg is commonly used as the lead leg in push hands. This allows you to direct the energy of an incoming push into the ground to maintain your torso in an advantageous forward position with good stability and balance. The back leg is commonly used as the attacking leg pushing against the ground to attack the opponent's weak point. It is important to have more weight and intent in your front leg when you are defending in push hands. So many people think that the intention needs to be in the back leg and give up so much of the front battlefield. This is a common misconception with over emphasis on yielding back. Holding your torso in a strong, solid front position does not equate to using physical force to resist against a push.
