Today I was asked about L-glutamine and its effect on neurotransmitters.
A patient of mine was concerned after reading that L-glutamine might raise glutamate, the brain’s main excitatory neurotransmitter, which can increase anxiety. They had been feeling fine while taking it—until that concern popped up online.
So here’s what I told them: Yes, L-glutamine can be a precursor to glutamate. But it’s also a precursor to GABA, which is calming.
Whether glutamine has a stimulating or calming effect depends on your overall brain chemistry, other supplements or medications you’re taking, caffeine intake, and stress levels.
Neurotransmitters typically work in a balance—glutamate and GABA regulate each other. In many cases, glutamine is actually adaptive: if glutamate is high, it may help raise GABA; if glutamate is low, it may help support it.
I encouraged them to reflect on their experience with it—how they felt while taking it—and not let a single article override their lived results.
Remember: context matters. Neurotransmitters aren’t one-size-fits-all.
