This painting was inspired by several indigenous content creators that I followed when I was still on Instagram. Part of being an ally to any marginalized community is listening to their messages/voices and amplifying them. This painting is entitled “October 1’st” the events depicted in this painting, show the frustration of some indigenous communities when it comes to “orange shirt day“. One of the main issues, is that a lot of white people pat themselves on the back for acknowledging the day and then promptly move on with the rest of their lives, as if their attendance fixes everything. Within every day life, the pollution of the air increases. the killing of our waters continues, and ignorance surrounding all of the missing and murdered indigenous women and children, continues to not be investigated. Every day “normal life” involves, forgetting about the fact that there are countless unmarked graves full of children that never made it home from residential schools. “Normal life” forgets about cultures and languages lost. Lifestyles of stewardship and pride forgotten. “Normal life” minimizes the cultural, generational complex PTSD being endured by entire nations of people. This painting show shows how indigenous communities are still grieving even after orange shirt day. You can also see one lingering ally at the top grieving along with Raven. There are some allies now, who truly care… but the needle needs to move much much farther ahead yet, in order for healing to take root. Today and every day, I am standing in solidarity as an indigenous Ally.
@allthingsdecolonial shout out for my shirt. Great purchase!
Shoutout to @beampaints2512 for all of the paint I use in my work. Worth every penny I’ve invested.
Shout out to @TheHalluciNation for music that inspired this piece, such as their song called “sharpshooter”. I would have loved to put this video to that song somehow, but YouTube won’t let me use more than 1 minute of a song.
