Modern Sonnet 179. Slaves to Fashion.
“Worn celebration of our history
And values, in a world too westernized.
While some think being naked makes them free,
We cover. Show our hands, our toes, our eyes.
Yet burkas can be fashion statements! Veils
And ridas may have colors, some have lace,
They’re not just black. That daemon viewpoint fails!
Debunked, the western myth of lack of choice!
For some come in two pieces, some denote
Our higher social strata. How you miss
The differences between our sisters’ clothes.”
I hold my tongue and all I think is this:
“To have your slaves believe they’re not your slaves,
Encourage them to decorate their chains.”
