Modern Sonnet 175. Imagining the Crazy Cat Lady's Backstory.
She fidgets with her father’s grey toupee,
Then draws a mushroom cloud upon the wall.
An atom bomb explodes. Somewhere. She says:
“Please, Poppets, look away. Don’t look at all.”
She muffles loves between her bosoms, weeps
And chokes and gobs near solid tar-stained phlegm.
The Cyprus Aphrodite purrs then shrieks
And claws her breasts. “Please, Poppets, please be friends.”
The Tonkinese ignores her, scratches, bites
And elongating, leaves. Upon her thighs
The scent of soaking laundry. Sat, she lights
A cigarette. She envies all their lives,
And coughing slowly hopes they’ll never know
Of bald men dead in bomb blasts years ago.
