Legal frameworks governing research with participants who lack capacity to consent require that proxy decision makers represent the person’s wishes about participation. However, people rarely discuss their preferences about participation in research ahead of time. A number of countries enable people to engage in “advance research planning". This may include making an advance research directive as well as choosing proxy decision makers. However, the legal status of these arrangements is unclear. This presentation will share key findings from the CONSULT research program which explored international differences in advance research planning provisions and conducted empirical research on the feasibility of introducing advance research planning in the U.K.
