This lecture is the second in a series of five lectures on the complexity of translation delivered by Professor Kobus Marais at the 2025 CETRA Research Summer School in Translation Studies. To learn more about our summer school, visit https://www.arts.kuleuven.be/cetra/re....
Summary:
This lecture considers translation against the background of the Anthropocene and the current ecological crisis, as evidenced in the work of Michael Cronin, among others. I argue that two factors that could contribute to solutions to the ecological crisis is, first, an understanding of the non-human other and, second, finding ways in which to facilitate communication between humans and non-human others. It explores how translation studies can contribute to enhancing the relationships between humans and other living organisms, as well as between humans and inert matter, i.e., the environment at large. It considers the contribution of biosemiotics to understand various levels at which translation takes place, as well as the contribution of translation to an ecosemiotic debate.
