Summary:
This lecture explains why translation cannot be seen as a linguistic activity only. This debate starts with empirical evidence that communication is increasingly multimodal, thanks to developments in computer technology, and that this multimodal translation has been studied outside of translation studies for decades now. It then delves into the basics of Peircean semiotics in order to expand the conceptualisation of translation to include all semiosic activity. I refer to recent scholarly work such as Campbell and Vidal’s book on experiential translation as well as Vidal’s work on translation in art and with objects. I also use data from the online arts game “Telephone” to illustrate the semiotic nature of translation.
