Severe Cold Wave Grips Jammu & Kashmir, Dal Lake Freezes as Temperatures Remain Below Zero
Jammu and Kashmir is currently witnessing an intense cold wave, severely affecting daily life across the region, particularly in the Kashmir Valley. Srinagar and several other parts of the valley recorded sub-zero temperatures, leading to widespread freezing of water bodies, supply lines, and natural streams.
One of the most striking visuals of the harsh winter conditions emerged from Srinagar, where the iconic Dal Lake froze completely due to extreme cold. Thick layers of ice were seen covering large portions of the lake, including areas around houseboats and shikaras. Locals say such extensive freezing of Dal Lake is a rare occurrence and reflects the severity of the ongoing cold spell.
According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of around minus 5 degrees Celsius, while other parts of the valley experienced even lower temperatures. Continuous freezing conditions have resulted in water shortages in some areas as pipelines have frozen. Morning and late-night hours have also seen icy roads and slippery conditions, impacting vehicular movement.
The situation is more severe in the Ladakh region. Drass, known as one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, recorded temperatures between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees Celsius, bringing normal life to a standstill. In Leh, water reservoirs and supply systems have frozen, forcing residents to take extra measures to cope with the biting cold.
Weather officials have forecast that the next 24 hours will remain dry but extremely cold across Jammu and Kashmir. Night temperatures are expected to drop further, while dense fog and frost are likely during early morning hours. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel, ensure adequate heating arrangements, and take precautions against cold-related health issues.
The ongoing cold wave once again highlights the harsh realities of winter in Jammu and Kashmir, with residents bracing for even colder days ahead.
