After meeting up with Eric and Matt, we headed for what we considered to be the most important dish on our Daegu food list: Mungtigi.

Raw beef is a common food across Korea. You will have no trouble finding yukhoe and yuk-sashimi in almost any neighborhood in any city.

But Daegu is the only city that serves “mungtigi” Mungtigi, which means “thumb-sized cut meat” uses the extremely lean beef shank from Hanoo cows. As the chef cuts around the tough sinew and bits of fat, the slices become rough chunks. The meat is stored in an extremely dry environment which gives the meat a soft and tender texture.

But more unique than the meat itself is the sauce it is traditionally served with it.
The special sauce is a mixture of oil, garlic, and ground chili peppers, and when the meat is dipped into the spicy garlic sauce, the flavors expand outside of more common Korean food flavors. This sauce is the real deal. And you won’t find anything else like it outside of Daegu.
