⨁ This poem is about depression. Depression is a serious medical condition that is associated with symptoms such as melancholy, loss of pleasure, loss of energy, difficulty in concentrating, and suicidal thoughts. It affects 1 in 10 adults (nearly 18 million adults in the US alone), and is the most prevalent cause of recognized 'disability' between ages 15-54. It is also the main cause of suicide, 1 person takes their life every 12 minutes, over 41,000 people per year worldwide.

The murky water rising above your head
You let go as the sound is muffled from above
Losing sight of the ones you love

Blankets twisted
The haze of an afternoon sun peeking through the blinds
As you chain yourself to your bed
Unable to move or commit
Motionless

Ache and loss
Of what and how
who and why
The questions that plague your mind

Falling slowly beyond
As others rush past
The edge too far from reach
Nowhere to grasp
As time moves swiftly on and on

A hollow sound
Void of emotion
Yet emotion-fettered
Reality and perception
At odds and scattered

Appearance only skin deep
Keep up the facade
So, you’ll think more of me

Tip toe through the glass
A balance of vulnerability
And all the masks I keep

But not okay is okay
Hiding only hurts
Reach out through the haze
For the helping hand
