A look in my log store to explain some basics about burning logs: seasoning, different species, hardwood, softwood and decay/spalting.
I season my hazel as 5' cordwood in a cord on the edge of the wood - it's easy to get at, it's sheltered from summer rain under the edge of the canopy and the edge of a wood is breezier than the interior. After 5-6 months (or approx 2 years if I miss Autumn dry weather) it is brought home and then cut into 12-14" rounds and stored under cover with good ventilation for final drying. Come November it is ready. If it stays out for 2 summers, it remains sound, but 3 summers is too long and it starts to rot. It'll still burn clean when dry, but has less 'heat' value and burns faster.
All the hazel comes from derelict coppice in an ancient woodland being restored to a 7 year coppice cycle. Even in a log pile, there can still be value for rare species such as slow worms and overwintering butterflies.
