'Free' firewood from coppice - a hack for cutting logs quickly and safely.

Been doing that for a decade. The logs come from derelict hazel coppice in an ancient woodland, which I cut and log myself, using the lop and top to dead-hedge to keep browsing deer out. Keeping deer out for at least 4 years helps ground flora (some of which is rare or confined to ancient woodlands) and helps hazel regrowth, the idea being that it can be sold standing 7 years after cutting. The stools themselves in this wood are themselves ancient and have been cut and re-cut for generations - see my other videos.
This vid shows the log brake and how to use it. Other designs are available. It briefly shows where the logs come from and where the logs get stacked. Seasoning in the wood, then stacking under cover gets moisture content well down so the wood burns clean. My neighbour over the road saw me backing a trailer full of cordwood into the drive and asked me what it was. He's been living there for 5 years and said he never knew I was running only on wood.
I never burn coal. Coal is sequestered carbon and it smells and pollutes a lot more than dry, seasoned wood. By burning wood, I'm burning in-cycle carbon - remember that woodlands capture carbon and don't sequester it (tie it up away from the biosphere like coal or gas or peat in a bog). You will find a lot of stuff saying that planting trees sequesters carbon. It's much more complicated than that. No money changes hands in cutting the coppice and preparing the firewood.
I do expend petrol and oil in the cutting as I use chainsaws. I do have to put in the work, which many people can't and I had to find a source and convince the owner I would tackle work to restore the coppice that no-one else would do for free and at a higher standard that many paid 'professionals' would turn in.
I do about half an acre per winter.
So, I seem to have sidestepped worries about the accelerating cost of heating. I'm a lucky low-income guy.
