UCL Risk & Disaster Reduction monthly event: The National Interest Recorded live on 18 November 2025 at UCL, London
In this special panel discussion, UCL Risk & Disaster Reduction (RDR) explores The National Interest: Politics After Globalization, the new book by Dr Philip Cunliffe, Associate Professor in International Relations at UCL RDR.
Dr Cunliffe is joined by chair, Professor Mark Pelling, and respondents Professor Joanna Faure Walker and Professor Peter Sammonds.
The panel examines how rediscovering the national interest can provide a durable foundation for international cooperation in a fragmenting world order.
Key themes include:
• Populist challenges and shifting geopolitical rivalries
• Trade wars and their impact on global governance
• Climate change adaptation and strategic resource management
• Industrial policy, supply chains, and multipolar cooperation
Drawing on historical case studies and contemporary insights, Dr Cunliffe and colleagues argue that reclaiming national control over economic policies and politics can help foster trust, reduce dependencies, and enable pragmatic collaboration across diverse states.
This event invited policymakers, academics, students, and concerned citizens to reflect on how national interest politics might shape a more secure and cooperative future.
