The UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR) hosted Gender, Disaster, and the Sendai Framework: A Decade of Progress? on 18 March 2025 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sendai Framework and the 6th anniversary of the UCL Centre for Gender and Disaster.
The panel explored key achievements since the adoption of the Sendai Framework in 2015, with a particular focus on progress in gender and disaster risk reduction. The event also included the launch of a special journal issue celebrating the Framework's 10th anniversary.

About the Speakers
Shigeo Tatsuki
Shigeo Tatsuki is a disaster sociologist focused on long-term recovery for vulnerable populations since the 1995 Kobe Earthquake. He has led longitudinal recovery surveys, contributed to inclusive disaster policy, and organised international studies following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. His work in social science and disaster resilience has been widely recognised.
Kristen Guida
Kristen Guida is Head of Strategy, Prevention, and Community Resilience at the Greater London Authority. She has over 15 years of experience in climate change adaptation, previously leading the London Climate Change Partnership and Climate South East. Her work focuses on social and environmental resilience, with an emphasis on social justice and equity in resilience policy and planning.
Dr Miwako Kitamura
Dr Miwako Kitamura is a Research Fellow at Tohoku University and a Sasakawa USA Senior Fellow (non-resident). She specialises in gender and disaster, focusing on social vulnerability, women’s leadership, and community-driven disaster resilience.
Professor Ilan Kelman
Ilan Kelman is Professor of Disasters and Health at UCL and a Professor II at the University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway. His research links disasters and health, with a focus on integrating climate change into both.
Dr Punam Yadav
Dr Punam Yadav is a Gender Scholar, Director of the UCL Humanitarian Institute, and Co-Director of the Centre for Gender and Disaster. Her work explores the intersection of gender and conflict, recognising them as a continuum in disaster and resilience studies.
