One of the stars of "Concert in a Convent Garden 2015" was Bongiwe Nakani - a sparking personality matched by a phenomenal coloratura mezzo-soprano.
Bongiwe Nakani was born in Cape Town and grew up in the township of Khayelitsha. She started singing at the age of seven. Her career in music blossomed at high school where her solo career began. She was national champion at the Tirisano Eisteddfod Choral Competition from 2004 -2007 and was awarded the prize for the best upcoming mezzo-soprano. She enrolled at the South African College of Music at UCT in 2009 and has completed her fourth year of Performer’s Diploma in Opera studying Patrick Tikolo. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, she won 2nd prize at the Schock Foundation Singing Competition. In 2013 she was also a finalist at the ATKV Musiqanto Singing Competition. She was invited to attend the Glimmerlgass Young Artists Program in America, performing in Kurt Weil’s Lost in the Stars. Whilst in the States she had the honour of singing at the United Nations on Nelson Mandela’s birthday. Among many operatic roles while at UCT, she also performed in the Tales of Hoffman in 2013 at Artscape. Also in 2013, she won 2nd prize and the ‘audience’ prize in Njabulo Madlala’s new Singing Competition. In 2013 she sang the role of Rosina in the Il Barbieri di Siviglia at Artscape. In 2014 she sang Marchesa Malibea in UCT’s Il Viaggio a Reims.
Mezzo-soprano Bongiwe Nakani is currently in the first year of her postgraduate degree at the University of Cape Town. She regularly appears on stage in cooperative productions with the Cape Town Opera in roles such as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia and, in the near future, Elisabetta inMaria Stuarda. Bongiwe grew up in Cape Town’s district of Khayelitsha, a township which is notorious for unemployment, HIV/AIDS and a high crime rate. The young singer fought to realize her dream and is now a famous opera talent in her homeland. In 2012, she had the incredible opportunity of singing at Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday celebrations, appearing in front of international leaders of countries and governments at the UN National Assembly in New York. Bongiwe has been awarded several times with The Schock Foundation Prize for Singing.
Bongiwe is currently engaged at the Vienna State Opera.
Concert in a Convent Garden is a charity event presented by Albert Combrink - the event uses chamber arrangements of opera and different genres to showcase South African vocal talents while raising money for good causes such as houses for the homeless.
