Brading, Isle of Wight Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located on the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, and around three miles south of Ryde, is the town of Brading.

Geographically, Brading is situated around two to three miles inland of the island's east coast. However, prior to the silting of the waters in recent centuries, it was a significant seaport. The Romans had an active presence in the area, as confirmed by the discovery of a Roman villa just south of the town centre.

The first recorded reference to an Anglo-Saxon settlement here dates back to 683 AD, when it is recorded as 'Brerdynge', believed to mean 'the people living by the ridge of the Downs' in Old English. It was during this period that St Wilfrid, a Northumbrian bishop, arrived on the Isle of Wight and converted the locals to Christianity, and allegedly established a church at Brading.

At the northern end of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates back to the 12th century, on the site of an Anglo-Saxon predecessor, supposedly where the aforementioned St Wilfrid converted the pagan population. The church is Grade I listed.

In 1285 Brading was granted a royal charter by Edward I, giving it the rights to a weekly market and an annual fair. Since then, it became known as ‘The Kynges Towne’. Among its unique features are the Bull Ring - a cast iron ring (featured after the 1-and-a-half minute mark) used for bull baiting up until 1835 when it was made illegal, and the town pound (featured at the 9-and-a-half minute mark) which was historically used for holding stray cattle, while owners failing to meet the costs for their return were summoned before a local court.

In 1864 the railway arrived in Brading. The station forms part of the Island Line which links Ryde to the north with Shanklin to the south. The trains used comprise of former London Underground stock.
