"I’ll sleep when I’m dead" is a dangerous mantra. In reality, skipping sleep just gets you there faster.
We often view sleep as a passive "shut down," but physiologically, it is a state of intense biological maintenance. During the deep, slow-wave phases of sleep (NREM), your body shifts into anabolic repair mode. Your blood pressure goes down, the stress hormone cortisol also decreases, and the brain activates the glymphatic system—a microscopic network that physically flushes out metabolic waste and toxins, such as amyloid-beta, accumulated during the day.
Chronic sleep deprivation triggers systemic inflammation, a root cause of most chronic diseases. This low-grade inflammation damages tissues and blood vessels, drastically increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
Sleeping fewer than six hours per night is directly linked to a higher risk of all-cause mortality—death from any cause. Furthermore, recent research suggests consistency is just as vital; irregular sleep-wake patterns can independently increase mortality risk by 20-48%.
If you want to extend your healthspan and lifespan, you can start treating sleep as your own life support system.
