Proper Non-League DRAMA! Eastwood vs Grantham

Grantham arrived needing wins to keep pace with the league leaders, while an Eastwood victory would be enough to send them into the play-off places. A proper non-league six-pointer.

Before kick-off, I caught up with Eastwood owner Lee, who spoke about his ambitions for the club and the direction Eastwood are heading. I also spoke with Grantham goalkeeper Jack Steggles, who stressed the importance of consistency if Grantham were to stay in the promotion race.

On the pitch, it was Eastwood who started the brighter, taking the game to Grantham and backed by a loud, young home support that gave the night a real edge. The pressure paid off on 30 minutes when a Declan Dunn corner curled all the way in and couldn’t be kept out by Steggles. Questions will be asked about the defending — and whether the keeper could have done better — but Eastwood won’t care. 1–0.

Grantham responded late in the half and came agonisingly close from a free-kick that crashed against the post, but they went in a goal down at half-time.

The second half was a different story, with Grantham much improved. On 58 minutes, they were handed a huge chance to level when a handball in the box resulted in a penalty. The Eastwood keeper delayed proceedings, picked up a yellow card, and when Terry Atem stepped up… he blazed it over the bar. A moment that could have changed everything — the keeper’s tactics had worked.

Things went from bad to worse for Grantham ten minutes later when Atem was sent off for an off-the-ball incident, leaving his side down to ten men. A costly and unnecessary moment.

Eastwood managed the game superbly from there, seeing out a 1–0 victory to secure a massive three points and move into the play-off places.

A big night at Coronation Park, full of talking points, controversy, and non-league drama.
