I headed to Barwell FC for their Southern League Premier Division Central clash with Banbury United, and it turned into a night that mixed community spirit with proper non-league drama.

Before kick-off, I spoke with Chairman Dave, winger Zayn Hakeem, manager Jimmy, and three representatives from Menphy’s Charity, who were in attendance for a brilliant Teddy Toss event aimed at helping make a child’s Christmas extra special. A fantastic initiative and great to see football giving something back.

Chairman Dave spoke about the club and its ambitions, Zayn discussed his growing following from Bangladesh, and Jimmy shared his thoughts on tonight’s game and the season ahead.

🧸 Once the teddies were thrown onto the pitch, it was Barwell who started the brighter. Despite their pressure, it took an incredible early save from the Barwell goalkeeper to keep things level at one point.

Barwell continued to push and finally got their reward on 38 minutes when Jevin Seaton’s shot went straight at the Banbury keeper, who failed to get his body behind it — a real howler — and the ball trickled over the line.
1–0 at half-time.

The second half started at a frantic pace with Banbury hitting the bar almost immediately. On 67 minutes, an off-the-ball incident between players saw Barwell reduced to 10 men, shifting the momentum.

Banbury piled on the pressure, hit the bar again, and threw everything forward, but Barwell dug deep and defended superbly to hold on for a huge three points.

A night of community, drama, controversy, and resilience — non-league football at its very best.
