Welcome to Git Gud, a series where I analyze my Apex Legends gameplay footage to see what went right, what went wrong, and what could be improved on to get better at the game. I’ll try to go through every aspect that I can, covering mechanics, positioning, and game sense. In this episode, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at some of my movement and positional mistakes. I’m finding that I’m not very spatially aware of my surroundings and that I’m not using nearby cover to the best of my ability. We’ll be focusing on exactly where I should be standing each step of the way instead of just general positioning. I’ve mentioned in another video that sometimes taking two steps to the left or to the right can make all the difference and I want to really dive into some examples of that here.
The difference in movement and positioning between pro and amateur players in Apex Legends is like night and day. I didn’t notice all the bad habits I had until I had been doing vod reviews for a while. For instance, I’ve noticed that I often give up good positioning and cover by constantly walking towards a fight for no reason. My movement isn’t smooth and deliberate; it’s often very reactionary which often puts me in bad situations. It’s also highly inefficient at times. Apex players who have good movement will get more things done in less time. While I have been getting better at Apex, I recognize that I still have a lot of things to improve on.
Good positioning goes beyond just taking the high ground all the time. You also need to learn to use the cover around you and work the angles so you don’t expose yourself to more people than necessary. Not only will placing yourself in the right spot make you a harder target to hit, it will also make it easy for you to break line of sight and disengage when things go bad. It forces enemies to make tough decisions which in turn increases the likelihood of them making a mistake that you can capitalize on.
Often times it’s easy and convenient to blame your teammates when things don’t go well. While you can’t control what other people do, you can control your own actions and there’s usually always something that you could have done better. Since Apex Legends is a fluid and fast paced game where situations are ever changing, it can be hard to think about all these things while you’re playing which is why analyzing your own gameplay afterwards is one of the quickest ways you can learn from your mistakes and get better at the game.
