Colmar, the picturesque city and commune located in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, greeted us with its well-preserved old town, architectural wonders, and a wealth of museums, including the renowned Unterlinden Museum, home to the exquisite Isenheim Altarpiece.

As we strolled through the enchanting streets of Colmar, we couldn't help but savor the experience of being on the Alsatian Wine Route, embracing its status as the "capital of Alsatian wine" (capitale des vins d'Alsace). The rich history of Colmar was first mentioned by Charlemagne in his chronicle about Saxon wars. It was a place of significance where Emperor Charles the Fat convened a diet in 884. Emperor Frederick II granted Colmar the status of a free imperial city in 1226, and in 1354, it joined the Décapole city league.

The city's embrace of the Protestant Reformation in 1575 marked a historical turning point. During the tumultuous Thirty Years' War, Colmar faced Swedish occupation in 1632, with the Schoeman family establishing the first town library in 1634.
