Join us on a spectacular journey to Colmar, France, as we embarked on a memorable family adventure during Columbus Day Weekend. Our four-day excursion through the charming towns and villages of Grand Est left us with unforgettable memories of fun-filled exploration, exquisite cuisine, delightful shopping, and even a few treasured finds.
Colmar, the picturesque city and commune located in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, greeted us with its well-preserved old town, architectural wonders, and a wealth of museums, including the renowned Unterlinden Museum, home to the exquisite Isenheim Altarpiece.
As we strolled through the enchanting streets of Colmar, we couldn't help but savor the experience of being on the Alsatian Wine Route, embracing its status as the "capital of Alsatian wine" (capitale des vins d'Alsace). The rich history of Colmar was first mentioned by Charlemagne in his chronicle about Saxon wars. It was a place of significance where Emperor Charles the Fat convened a diet in 884. Emperor Frederick II granted Colmar the status of a free imperial city in 1226, and in 1354, it joined the Décapole city league.
The city's embrace of the Protestant Reformation in 1575 marked a historical turning point. During the tumultuous Thirty Years' War, Colmar faced Swedish occupation in 1632, with the Schoeman family establishing the first town library in 1634. In 1635, the city's residents defended their harvest against Imperialist forces.
In 1673, Colmar was conquered by France under King Louis XIV and officially ceded in the 1679 Treaties of Nijmegen. Over the years, Colmar faced various challenges, including a cholera epidemic in 1854. The city's fate shifted between France and Germany during the 20th century, but today, it stands as a testament to resilience and continuity.
Colmar's governance has remained in the hands of conservative parties since 1947, a testament to its enduring traditions. The city is also renowned for the remarkable discovery of the Colmar Treasure in 1863, a hoard of precious objects hidden by Jews during the Black Death.
