In Part V of my quest to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather, 1LT Wesley E. Bogart, I travel to Cherbourg, France, where he and the 398th Engineers left an indelible mark during World War II. From September to December 1944, the 398th worked tirelessly to restore Cherbourg's strategic port and surrounding infrastructure after its liberation from Nazi control.
This episode dives into their incredible accomplishments, including increasing the port's unloading capacity from 8,000 to 23,500 tons per day and constructing major projects like the Gare Maritime dock, Basin Napoleon railroad sidings, and Quay de Hornet ship berths. Despite the constant challenges of tides, debris, and limited resources, their ingenuity shone through.
We’ll also explore some of the unit's lesser-known but critical assignments:
Clearing dangerous minefields despite limited knowledge of German demolitions.
Salvaging and repurposing abandoned equipment to complete vital projects.
Transforming Fort du Hornet into living quarters and a radar station.
Working alongside German POWs on grueling yet essential labor tasks.
Finally, I recount their departure on a cold December morning, boarding "Forty-and-Eights" for the journey to Verdun, where the next chapter of their story began.
This tribute to the 398th Engineers highlights the unsung efforts that ensured the success of Allied operations in Europe. Cherbourg became a vital supply hub, and it was their resilience, skill, and hard work that made it happen.
Join me as I walk through this historic city and pay homage to the legacy of my grandfather and the 398th Engineers.

About us:
@DestinationEverywhere and @dqadventure were created to chronicle our family's memories of traveling while living in Stuttgart, Germany for four and a half years (2016 - 2020). Swabia was a near perfect location to reach most of Europe, so we used every opportunity to travel to locations such as France, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, England, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Czech, Croatia and much more.
We returned to the USA for just under 2 years (2021-2022) and did a little traveling. In late 2022 we were offered another opportunity to live in Europe-- this time in Brussels, Belgium.
Now we're taking everything we learned and applying it for Destination:Everywhere 2.0. We travel by car 🚗, plane, ✈️, and train 🚆 to see as much of Europe as possible. From historic sites to beautiful cities and from country mountains to gorgeous beaches, we pack it all in -- and rather inexpensively. We're big fans of AirBnB and Booking.com for our lodging; TrainlineEU, EasyJet and Ryan Air for traveling and we do a lot of driving. We appreciate our friends and fans for watching our videos!
