Welcome to #Jerusalem, #HolyCity to all three #monotheistic #religions. In this video, we will silently walk through the #DominusFlevitChurch on the #MountOfOlives in #Jerusalem. Tradition states that this is the location where #Jesus stopped to look at the #CityOfJersualem and the #JewishTemple on #MountMoriah. As #Jesus beheld the sight, he was struck with grief, as he knew that God would allow the Temple and the city to be destroyed soon. Upon experiencing this feeling of grief, #Jesus began to cry.

According to the #NewTestament, this is the location that commemorates the time shortly before #Jesus’ #EntryIntoJerusalem, when he came from the Village of #Bethpage to the #MountOfOlives.

Excavations show a #JewishBurialComplex from the #SecondTemplePeriod at this location, containing some 120 #ossuaries (bone boxes) and 7 #sarcophagi, with #Jewish names engraved on them. One of the ossuaries bears the Greek letters χ and ρ, which are the first two letters of the name #Christos (#Messiah).

The #Franciscans, who excavated this site, maintain that this was a burial site for #JudeoChristians in the #RomanByzantine period. A #monastery was built here in the #Byzantine period, and its remains are visible in the courtyard and under the modern church building.

At the end of the path we see the remains of a #WinePress with a #MosaicFloor covered by a cement roof and next to it a small cistern. A small Byzantine cemetery was also discovered here.

At the entrance of the church is a magnificent #ByzantineMosaicFloor (03:40). The decorations seen in this mosaic were common in #synagogues. The #Byzantine inscription (03:50) on the mosaic mentions #Simon, the friend of #Christos.

The modern church was built in #1955 by #AntonioBarluzzi, who wanted to put visual reminders of the event that occurred here on the church's structure. Therefore, we can see that the dome of the church was built in the shape of a tear (03:20), and that each of the four corners of the roof features a #Lacrymatory, which in antiquity was a vessel for mourners to save their tears in.

The altar of the church is on the western wall (04:20), and not on the eastern wall, as is customary in churches. The altar was placed there in order to allow for the view over the city for anyone praying here.

The #apse of the original #ByzantineChurch is incorporated in the eastern wall of the modern church, and at its foot we see another mosaic. (05:35)

The hen and the chicks portrayed in the modern mosaic below the altar (04:45) are a reminder of #Jesus’ words in Luke Chapter 13 Verse 34: "I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings"

The heart of #Scottish nobleman #JohnPatrickCrichtonStuart was buried near this church in 1900.
