Harley-Davidson V-Rod (officially the VRSC or V-Twin Racing Street Custom) is a line of liquid-cooled muscle cruisers produced from 2002 to 2017. It represented a radical departure from traditional Harley-Davidson design, featuring a high-revving engine co-developed with Porsche.
Key Specifications
Engine (Revolution®): A liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-Twin with dual overhead cams (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder.
Generation 1 (2002–2007): 1130cc engine producing ~115 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque.
Generation 2 (2008–2017): 1250cc engine producing ~123–125 hp and 84–86 lb-ft of torque.
Transmission: 5-speed manual with a high-performance carbon fiber final belt drive.
Performance: Capable of 0–60 mph in roughly 3.5–3.6 seconds, with a top speed of approximately 135–145 mph.
Fuel System: The actual fuel tank (3.7 to 5.0 gallons) is located under the seat to lower the center of gravity; the traditional "tank" area is a cover for the airbox.
Notable Models
VRSCA V-Rod (2002–2006): The original model with anodized aluminum bodywork, a 180mm rear tire, and forward controls.
VRSCDX Night Rod Special (2007–2017): A "Dark Custom" variant with a blacked-out finish, a massive 240mm rear tire, and orange racing stripes.
VRSCF V-Rod Muscle (2009–2017): Features aggressive styling with mock air scoops, broad-shouldered bodywork, and unique side-exit exhausts.
VRSCR Street Rod (2006–2007): The sportiest variant, featuring mid-mounted controls, inverted forks, a steeper rake for better cornering, and a higher seat height.
VRXSE Destroyer: A non-street-legal drag racing version producing over 165 hp.
Ownership & Shopping Considerations
Ride Style: Known for straight-line "dragster" performance. Handling is often described as heavy or stable due to the long wheelbase and fat rear tire on later models.
Technology: Later models (2008+) introduced a slipper clutch and optional ABS (which became standard on some models by 2014).
Market Value: Since being discontinued in 2017, the V-Rod has become a collector's item. Used prices typically range from $6,000 to $13,500 depending on the year, condition, and specific model.
Pros/Cons:
Pros: Incredible engine reliability (4.8/5 owner rating), unique aesthetics, and high-speed stability.
Cons: Unconventional riding ergonomics ("clamshell" posture), limited cornering clearance, and polarizing style among Harley purists.
