Least Cost Method (LCM) is a procedure used to obtain an initial basic feasible solution of a transportation problem.In this method, the cell with the minimum transportation cost in the entire cost table is selected first. The maximum possible quantity, equal to the minimum of the corresponding supply and demand, is allocated to that cell. After the allocation, the satisfied row or column is deleted, and the process is repeated by choosing the next lowest-cost cell from the remaining table.The method continues until all supplies and demands are satisfied.The Least Cost Method gives a better starting solution than the North-West Corner Rule because it considers transportation costs while making allocations.
