What happens when food becomes a pawn in global power struggles?
Re-watch this timely webinar on "The New Geopolitics of Food: trade wars, hunger, and the case for cooperative self-reliance" from 3 June 2025.
Four IPES-Food experts – Jennifer Clapp (Canada), Million Belay (Ethiopia), Jomo Kwame Sundaram (Malaysia), and Elisabetta Recine (Brazil) – joined moderator Thin Lei Win for a discussion on the new era of trade wars, geopolitical rivalry, conflict, and economic instability – and what this means for food systems. As food becomes a pawn in great power rivalries, global food systems are on the front line and up for major disruption.
Yet amidst these uncertainties, these experts agreed that this crisis may also mark a turning point: opening space for solutions based on cooperative self-reliance and more resilient local food economies.
