Innovative work in disease neurogenomics is being led at Mount Sinai by Dr. Panos Roussos, Director of the Center for Disease Neurogenomics and Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Psychiatry, to better understand genetic risk factors that drive serious mental illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases.
By leveraging the power of genomics and new technologies, Dr. Roussos' lab is able to identify molecular signatures specific to different cell types, which is critical to finding new analytical approaches using AI. The goal is to find disease signatures in specific parts of the brain, in specific cells, which will lead to the discovery of new treatments. This research has the potential to benefit a great majority of patients and to find medication that is already FDA-approved for other diseases that could be repurposed for clinical practice right away.
