About the Composer

Born March 18, 1957 in Beirut (Lebanon) “A fascinating composer.” (Gary Higginson, composer) Bechara El-Khoury discovered the piano at the age of 4 in the family home. He comes from a musical line and literary prestige: the Rahbani brothers are his maternal uncles and Al-Akhtal al Saghir is his grandfather. His mother, a singer, created the works of her brothers, Assi and Mansour Rahbani, before they met Feyrouz. At the age of 6, Bechara El-Khoury began learning the piano, but it was "neither very serious nor very regular". At the age of 12, he began a serious musical education: private piano lessons, harmony, counterpoint, and analysis with Hagop Arslanian. Bechara El Khoury has never attended the Conservatory. From the age of 8, Bechara El Khoury composes melodies on the piano. At the age of 12, he already has his active two piano concertos. Between the age of 14 and the age of 16, he wrote a dozen symphonies. chapel master at the church of Antelias, he also composed a lot of liturgical music during this period.
In 2016 in the context of a world tour for the one-hundredth anniversary since Yehudi Menuhin's birth, Daniel Hope performed Unfinished Journey for violin and string orchestra in more than fifty cities spread over four continents.
In 2018, the world premiere of Chant de lumière pour la Sainte Vierge for cello and orchestra by OJIF took place, directed by David Molard at the Rutebeuf Theater. In the same year, they created Symphony No. 2 - Träume von Wien at the Maison de Unesco in Paris.
In 2018 his symphonic poem n°6 Espaces-Fragmentations is selected for the 19th edition
of the Grand prix lycéen des compositeurs.
His second symphony Traume Von Wien opus 106, was premiered in October 2018 by the
Orchestre des Jeunes d’Ile de France under the direction of David Molard-Soriano at the
UNESCO Palace in Paris. The program also included his Clarinet Concerto, Autumn
Pictures, performed by Patrick Messina.
In 2020, le symphonic poem n° 7 Il fait novembre en mon âme is premiered at the
Philharmonie de Paris by the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Isabelle Druet, conducted
by Pierre Bleuse, commissioned par the Fondation de France in memory of the victims of the
terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015.
In August 2021, on the occasion of his residency at the Caunes-Minervois
his Image pour quatuor à cordes, La nuit is premiered by the quartett Ellipse.
In October 2021, Bechara El-Khoury receives the arts et lettres medal from the French
Ministry of culture.
Bechara El-Khoury lives in Paris.
